Outdoor Activities

Some would call them crazy but there are groups who actually start running at 5 am. Several doctors ride their bikes to work making their commute easy and pollution free. And, you can easily play golf on several different courses.

New Castle’s premier Baker Park features a $3 million Aquatic Center which is ever so much more than “just a pool”. It features a special wet deck, water toys, beach-like entry and more. Also on site are the F.U.N playground, bask etball and tennis courts, shuffle board and regulation horse shoe pits.

If you’re more passive about outdoor activities Memorial Park has great walking trails, cabins and picnic areas surrounded by four bodies of water – paddle boats anyone? Or you can catch state and national horse shows every weekend throughout the summer.

Water lovers can fish, canoe or kayak on local lakes or travel to nearby Brookville Lake for power boating and water skiing. There also are many lakes in northern and southern Indiana that provide weekend cabin retreats.

Wilbur Wright State Fish & Wildlife Area features bluegill, bass and trout fishing as well as game and waterfowl hunting on its 1400 acres.

Summit Lake provides a large lake, boat ramps, beach and picnic area, excellent bird watching and a wildlife observation area

Westwood Park has a brand new 10 mile mountain bike trail (one of the best in Indiana) for those who like to go off-road when they bike. Horse lovers can take advantage of the 6.5 mile horse trail and fishing is excellent (even ice fishing in winter). You can kayak on the lake and enjoy the picnic areas and play fields.

Other outdoor activities might include walking the community’s  linear park that is a section of the National Road Heritage Trail (with more being planned) or the annual Canoe the Big Blue – river that is. First-timers are welcome and rentals are available.
